Baliflora
Perfumer: Jean-Claude Ellena
«There are places whose scents are stored in memory much longer than landscapes. When the red spider lily, the white lily ginger and the frangipane bloom, encircling the streets, and the lotus opens onto the smallest mirrors of water, the landscapes become fragrance in turn. Among the flowers of Bali, the inhabitants have made the Frangipane, the emblem of their island to offer to the gods of the Hindu pantheon. Centered to ceremonies, dances, offerings where smells and colors mix until they become one, it seemed to me then that the scent of those flowers told the beauty and diversity of the island.»
All about this fragrance
Vibe check
Baliflora suits an unhurried afternoon when conversation stays close and the room is open to daylight. Its frangipani and watery lotus suggest flowers floating in a shallow bowl: a soft floral presence, with orange blossom keeping the mood bright rather than ceremonial.
How to wear
Spring and mild summer weather suit its fresh floral character. Start with one or two sprays on the neck or forearms, allowing the flowers and musks to mingle with skin warmth. In hotter weather, apply lightly to keep the floral impression airy rather than enveloping.
Who it’s for
For those drawn to luminous florals, soft musks and the watery delicacy of lotus. Baliflora offers a tropical floral theme without relying on sugary fruit or gourmand richness, making it appealing to admirers of Ellena’s restrained, impressionistic style.
Release year
2019
The nose
Jean-Claude Ellena is known for transparent, economical compositions that suggest a landscape or sensation without reproducing every detail. His work includes Terre d’Hermès, Un Jardin sur le Nil and Cartier Déclaration, and his years as Hermès’ in-house perfumer helped establish his distinctive style of olfactory understatement. For Baliflora, he distilled the complexity of Bali into a floral composition centered on frangipani, choosing a defining impression rather than an exhaustive portrait of the island.
Collaborators
Roberto Drago, Laboratorio Olfattivo’s co-founder and artistic director, supplied the personal memories and creative ambition behind Baliflora. His long-running wish to translate a Bali journey into perfume became the starting point for Ellena’s proposal to focus the composition on frangipani.
Laboratorio Olfattivo’s story
Laboratorio Olfattivo treats perfume as a space for artistic exploration, giving perfumers creative freedom to interpret memories, journeys and emotions. Founded by Daniela Caon and Roberto Drago, the Italian house pairs this expressive approach with restrained packaging that keeps attention on the fragrance itself.
Baliflora’s concept
Baliflora grew from Roberto Drago’s memories of Bali and his long-standing search for a fragrance that could express them. Ellena proposed concentrating on frangipani rather than gathering every scent of the island. His accompanying narrative evokes flowers surrounding streets and water, and the ceremonies, dances and offerings in which their scents mingle with color.
Extra info
Baliflora joined Tuberosis, also composed by Ellena, and Lucien Ferrero’s Tantrico and Vetyverso in the four-fragrance Masters’ Collection launch marking the house’s tenth anniversary. The official note list is presented as a single palette rather than a conventional top, heart and base pyramid.
