Aromatic sage, coriander and black pepper combine with mandarin and lemon for laid-back sophistication. Vetiver and musk give it muscle, while orris provides lean, refined woodiness.
All about this fragrance
Vibe check
A white shirt with the sleeves pushed back, a conversation that turns into a lively debate. The citrus and aromatic spice feel relaxed and alert, while the woody base adds enough firmness to suggest conviction rather than formality.
How to wear
The citrus–aromatic profile lends itself to mild spring weather and warmer days, with cedarwood and vetiver providing a woody counterweight. Start with one or two sprays on the neck or forearms; keep application lighter in heat so the pepper, ginger and clove remain accents rather than the focus.
Who it’s for
For those who enjoy citrus freshness with an aromatic, peppery edge rather than sweetness. It suits a taste for understated woody fragrances, herbal detail and relaxed styling with a little friction.
Release year
2019
The nose
Christian Vermorel.
Collaborators
Mathilde Purseigle created the illustration that preceded and guided the fragrance composition. Maison Matine cofounders Marie Kellou and Arthur Ponroy shaped the debut collection through community conversations and social research, giving this fragrance its theme of conviction and dissent.
Maison Matine’s story
Maison Matine pairs independent perfumery with graphic illustration and community-led ideas. Its identity favors simplicity, diversity and creative freedom over conventional luxury and seduction codes. The house makes its fragrances in France and specifies organic wheat alcohol and recycled or recyclable cardboard packaging without cellophane.
Esprit de Contradiction’s concept
Created for Maison Matine’s debut collection, Esprit de Contradiction takes inspiration from a generation prepared to challenge injustice and defend its convictions. The illustration came before the perfume, providing a visual brief for the composition. Fresh tangerine and warm cedarwood express the tension between acceptance and assertion.
Extra info
Esprit de Contradiction belongs to Maison Matine’s six-fragrance Collection Origine. The brand specifies a 20% fragrance concentrate, and its illustration-first development makes the bottle artwork part of the creative brief rather than simply a finishing touch.
