Iris Pallida - Marie Jeanne - Bloom Perfumery

Perfumer: Alexis Dadier

A beautiful dedication to iris and the alluring woody powdery aroma extracted from its rhizomes. Rhizomes are the flower’s creeping rootstalks which it sends under the ground to spread around.

It takes about 1000 kg of dry rhizomes (carefully dried and cured for 4 years) to produce just 2 kg of iris butter (also called orris).

It’s truly precious - Marie Jeanne spent about a year going through 160 attempts before arriving at their perfect blend of several iris extracts: butter of iris Florentina and iris Pallida and absolute of iris Germanica. Absolutes are derived from butter to achieve a fresher character.

Their goal was to create a modern, refined iris perfume and to depart from dated powdery violet interpretations.

Very few perfume houses have access to the ingredients of the same caliber that Marie Jeanne have used so generously in their Iris Pallida. The perfume is 28% strong, very diffusive but at the same time tantalizingly delicate.

The crown jewel of the formula, the blend of orris extracts, is set on a pedestal of sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver. Iris Pallida is an elegant and sensual modern iris perfume, meticulously blended from the most refined raw materials available to perfumers at the moment.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

Its register is quiet but not withdrawn: a late-afternoon conversation that continues after everyone else has left the room. The iris lends a composed, powder-soft presence, while hazelnut and sandalwood bring enough warmth to keep that reserve inviting rather than austere.

How to wear

Mild or cool weather should give the creamy iris and woody base room to unfold. Start with one or two sprays on skin beneath clothing: the described diffusion suggests little is needed for a noticeable presence. In warmer conditions, apply more sparingly to keep the powdery, amber-toned texture light.

Who it’s for

For those who enjoy iris’s rooty, woody and softly powdered facets but prefer them to overt violet sweetness. The hazelnut and sandalwood should also appeal to lovers of creamy woods and restrained gourmand accents rather than sugary dessert perfumes.

2022 (or 2023)

The nose

Alexis Dadier is the best-supported perfumer attribution, although published credits differ. His work here explores iris beyond familiar violet-like powderiness, balancing its earthy, creamy texture with hazelnut and a contemporary woody backdrop.

Collaborators

Founder Georges Maubert helped shape the creative direction with Alexis Dadier, seeking a less conventional expression of iris rhizome. His brief centered on moving beyond violet-associated interpretations, with hazelnut emerging as a soft, rounded counterpoint.

Marie Jeanne’s story

Founded in Grasse by Georges Maubert, Marie Jeanne places raw materials at the center of its perfumes, using restrained compositions to reveal their individual character. Its identity draws on a multigenerational connection to Robertet, with an emphasis on sourcing, traceability and minimalist packaging inspired by traditional laboratory vessels.

Iris Pallida’s concept

Iris Pallida grew from a wish to reveal iris rhizome beyond its familiar powdery-violet associations. Iris butter and absolute form the core, while a fresh-hazelnut accord brings rounded softness. Sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver support the composition, with modern woody and musky materials giving it fullness without obscuring the iris.

Extra info

The official composition specifies Iris pallida butter from Turkey and Italy, alongside New Caledonian sandalwood and Spanish labdanum. Its hazelnut note is an accord, adding a gently gourmand dimension to the iris-led structure.
