Iron Duke - Beaufort - Bloom Perfumery

With Iron Duke Beaufort start a new series: ‘REVENANTS’, a collection of olfactory impressions of figures from Britain’s past. Characters from the history whose presence lingers, subtly.

Vol 1 – ‘Iron Duke’ is a tribute to Arthur Wellesley, Duke Of Wellington (1769 – 1852). Here, perfumer Julie Dunkley has created a strikingly powerful fragrance with animalic depths  – an apparition of the celebrated horseman, warrior politician and sartorial pioneer.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

Iron Duke belongs to a brisk afternoon spent outdoors, with the smell of worn tack lingering on a heavy coat as you come inside. Its metallic edge and animalic leather suggest a composed but formidable presence: tactile, unsentimental and better suited to open space than close quarters.

How to wear

Cool weather is a natural setting for its dense leather, oud and dark musks. Start with one spray on the torso and assess before adding more; the powerful animalic character calls for restraint indoors. Warmth may bring those darker facets forward, so apply especially lightly in heated rooms.

Who it’s for

For wearers drawn to assertive animalic leathers, smoky woods and metallic contrasts rather than sweetness or polished softness. Its appeal lies in the tension between saddle soap, hay, oud and dark musk, making it a compelling choice for those who enjoy challenging, texture-led perfumery.

The nose

Julie Dunkley created Iron Duke, translating its horse-and-rider concept into a forceful composition of animalic leather, oud, metal and dark musks. Working with Leo Crabtree, she balanced the original concept’s pronounced animalic character with leather and metallic facets.

Collaborators

BeauFort founder Leo Crabtree developed the creative concept and worked with Julie Dunkley on its execution. His initial idea, called War Horse, built the fragrance from earth, grass and hay upward through the horse, the rider’s boots, the saddle and metal harness fittings.

Beaufort’s story

BeauFort London approaches perfume through British history, maritime imagery and elemental force. Founded by musician Leo Crabtree, the house embraces deliberately polarizing compositions, using smoke, gunpowder, tar and charred woods as a recurring vocabulary rather than pursuing universal appeal.

Iron Duke’s concept

Iron Duke opened the Revenants collection, a series of olfactory portraits of figures from Britain’s past. Inspired by Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, and his horse Copenhagen, it explores the blurred boundary between horse and rider through animalic leather, saddle soap, bright metal, hay and cognac.

Extra info

The horse motif on the launch bottle was designed by tattoo artist Robert Gisbourne-Ashby. Wellington’s horse Copenhagen also formed part of the fragrance’s inspiration, giving the equestrian imagery a specific historical connection.
