Leather Shot - Olfactive Studio - Bloom Perfumery

A new project with Bertrand Duchaufour and a landscape artist/photographer Martin Hill.

The same way in which Martin goes to a sight and rearranges what nature left there into an installation, the perfumer rearranged some molecules and materials to put the beauty of a natural material into focus.

Also Martin aims to let his stuctures to be absorbed back into natural chaos. Perfume evaporates into the environment in a similar fashion, beautiful but transient.

In Leather Shot all the focus is on the leather aroma effect (which can be achieved through many combinations of various perfume materials). In this particular perfume it's velvety orris, black tea and a touch of smoky sandalwood that create that dense, dark and heady aroma of suede.

The structure in the image below is a bit like the leather effect in perfumery. It manifests itself on the surface after some aromatic forces have worked their mysterious magic.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

A wool coat left open after coming indoors, with the dry warmth of suede still close to the body: Leather Shot belongs to an unhurried, intimate register. Bitter orange and black tea keep its dark leather from feeling plush or sweet, lending a restrained edge to a conversation held at close quarters.

How to wear

Start with one or two sprays on the torso or neck, especially in cool weather, when the dense suede and smoky woods suit the temperature. Warm skin can bring the spice and leather forward, so apply more sparingly in heat. Allow the bitter-orange opening to settle before judging the softer iris-led texture.

Who it’s for

For those drawn to dry, textured leather rather than sweet or glossy leather accords. Its powdery iris, black tea and smoky sandalwood will appeal to lovers of vintage-style perfumery who want suede softness without losing a dark, woody edge.

The nose

Bertrand Duchaufour is known for intricate compositions that balance woods, incense, spices and textured contrasts. His work includes L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Timbuktu and Dzongkha, fragrances admired for their atmospheric depth. For Leather Shot, he brings that approach to a leather accord, pairing powdery iris and black tea with smoky woods.

Collaborators

Photographer and land artist Martin Hill supplied the image that inspired Leather Shot: dark sand whose grain evokes leather. Olfactive Studio founder Céline Verleure selected the photographs for the first Sepia trilogy, establishing the visual starting points for Duchaufour’s compositions.

Olfactive Studio’s story

Olfactive Studio connects contemporary photography with perfumery, inviting perfumers to interpret images rather than follow conventional fragrance briefs. Founded by Céline Verleure, the house treats both media as ways to capture a moment and awaken memory, with creative freedom and gender-free expression central to its identity.

Leather Shot’s concept

Leather Shot began with Martin Hill’s photograph of dark-brown sand where a stream meets the ocean on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Its grain suggested leather, turning a landscape surface into an olfactory brief. Created for the first Sepia trilogy, the fragrance builds that tactile impression through iris, black tea and smoky woods.

Extra info

Leather Shot belongs to Sepia’s original trio alongside Vanilla Shot and Chypre Shot. The collection uses a 20% perfume concentration, and its sienna leather-wrapped bottles were designed by Camille Toupet to evoke the warm tones of sepia photography.
