Ortica Ortica - Zanini - Bloom Perfumery

"Tall nettles cover up, as they have done These many springs, the rusty harrow, the plough Long worn out, and the roller made of stone: Only the elm butt tops the nettles now. This corner of the farmyard I like most: As well as any bloom upon a flower I like the dust on the nettles, never lost Except to prove the sweetness of a shower."

Tall nettles, Edward Thomas

Green and sweet in one bottle. The damp, breathing sensation of nettle follows a stony path to the coconut/sandalwood effect of massoia bark. The result is a sharp green flicker highlighting a dusty cherry oud.

Limited to 75 bottles, 40% extrait.

Important notice:

Zanini blends are living botanical compositions, crafted entirely from natural materials and free from synthetic fixatives or stabilizers. As with all things living, subtle variations are part of their nature: over time, you may notice a gentle evolution in colour, texture, or the appearance of natural sediment. These are not imperfections, but part of the character of the raw materials themselves.

These blends are olfactive smellscapes (but neither aromatherapy, nor ‘spray-and-go’ perfumes) and sensory experiences, closer to works of art created in the scented plane (rather than, say, visual or audio).

Certain essential oils and absolutes that are used in Zanini’s 100% natural blends may potentially cause allergies in some people. Please spray Zanini’s blends on fabric (on sleeves, scarves, etc.).

Zanini advise that those who are prone to allergic reactions, pregnant and nursing women, as well as people with chronic illnesses to be extra careful. Before trying natural blends, study the list of ingredients and consult with a doctor if you are not sure or a had a history of allergies. If you do decide to put these blends on your skin (unable to resist the temptation) always test the blend on the inside part of your elbow first and wait.

Do not spray these blends liberally as a cloud in the way you would spray a conventional perfume. Zanini’s smellscapes need to be… carefully applied and experienced. Be mindful that some oils can also make your skin hyper-sensitive to UV.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

The register is quiet but not polite: nettle’s pungent green edge cuts through an enveloping cherry sweetness. It suits an unhurried afternoon spent close enough for conversation, carrying the impression of damp plants and dusty ground indoors rather than a conventional polished perfume trail.

How to wear

Start with one restrained spray on a dark, washable sleeve or scarf, testing a hidden area first because the natural materials may stain. Mild or cool weather offers a useful setting for the green–sweet contrast. Avoid misting it as a cloud; Zanini recommends fabric application, and warns of potential allergies and UV sensitivity with skin exposure.

Who it’s for

For lovers of botanical perfumery who enjoy pungent greenery, earthy textures and sweetness with an unusual edge. Its nettle, cherry and attar contrast will appeal more to curious, attentive wearers than to those seeking a conventional floral or gourmand.

The nose

Filippo Zanini is the perfumer and fragrance-making cofounder of Zanini. His practice centres on natural materials and the construction of olfactory landscapes rather than conventional perfume structures. For Ortica Ortica, he made nettle tincture and paired its earthy, mineral character with attar, cherry and vanilla.

Zanini’s story

Zanini treats fragrance as an autonomous art form: its natural-material “smellscapes” evoke real or imagined places rather than follow trends or seek universal approval. Hands-on harvesting and processing, slow production and individually numbered bottles support a practice built around close, attentive smelling.

Ortica Ortica’s concept

Requests for something sweet and something green led Filippo Zanini to combine the two. Nettle brought back the path behind his home and the taste of ravioli filling; he harvested it for a tincture, paired it with the vegetal richness of Ensar Oud’s Lokoloko attar, then added cherry and vanilla. Edward Thomas’s poem Tall Nettles frames the composition with images of rain, dust and an overgrown farmyard.

Extra info

Ortica Ortica is a 40% extrait released in an edition of 75 bottles, each holding 30 mL. Its nettle tinctures use both fresh and dried plants, while a tincture of fresh, ripe cherries is subsequently converted into an absolute. Natural sediment or changes in colour are part of the blend’s evolving material character.
