How many greens can fit in a bottle? This edt amps nature with vibrant and herbaceous lentisk and basil, along with head-clearing spearmint and juniper. Lime and vetiver adds treble and bass. You can’t say “Play Green” without smiling.

All about this fragrance
Vibe check
Think of the first hour outside after a morning spent indoors: sleeves pushed back, a brisk pace, attention sharpened. Mint and lime give that sense of a reset, while basil and lentisk keep the impression leafy and slightly resinous rather than conventionally sporty.
How to wear
The herbal-citrus profile lends itself to spring and warm days, when mint and lime feel especially refreshing. Start with two sprays on the neck or forearms; let the fragrance settle before adding more, allowing the vetiver and cedar to balance its bright green opening.
Who it’s for
For those drawn to crushed herbs, tart citrus and dry woods rather than sweet fruit or plush florals. Its appeal lies in a clear, graphic kind of freshness, with lentisk and juniper adding texture beyond a straightforward mint scent.
Release year
2012
The nose
Antoine Maisondieu is a French perfumer whose work spans experimental niche fragrances and major designer releases. His Comme des Garçons creations include the woody Hinoki and Sugi; elsewhere, Burberry London for Men shows his handling of warmer, spiced textures. For PLAY Green, he explored an aromatic palette of herbs, citrus and woods, paying particular attention to the slightly absinthe-like facet of nanah mint.
Collaborators
Christian Astuguevieille, then artistic director of Comme des Garçons Parfums, helped shape the trio’s creative brief: simple, approachable fragrances connected to the PLAY clothing line, rather than another deliberately challenging conceptual experiment.
Comme Des Garcons’s story
Comme des Garçons treats perfume as a medium for experimentation, moving between abstract industrial smells and more familiar materials presented from unexpected angles. PLAY Green expresses the house’s freedom through deliberate simplicity: a recognizable green palette without an elaborate narrative.
Play Green’s concept
PLAY Green arrived in spring 2012 alongside PLAY Red and PLAY Black, following the original PLAY fragrance released in 2007. The trio translated the clothing line’s direct visual identity into approachable scents. Green took its cue from aromatic vegetation, with mint, lime, basil and juniper giving the color an olfactory expression.
Extra info
The bottle carries a green version of Filip Pagowski’s PLAY heart, an emblem originally drawn for another Comme des Garçons project. The mint is specified as nanah mint, whose slightly absinthe-like facet was a particular point of interest for Maisondieu.
