Perfumer: Jean Claude Ellena

One of the two fragrances created by Jean Claude Ellena to celebrate the history and craftsmanship of Grasse, the cradle of modern perfume aesthetics and the royal floral couple of the region: jasmine grandiflorum and rosa centifolia.

Rose de Mai is a term perfumers’ use exclusively for roses harvested in May in the Grasse region in the South of France. The flowers need the unique combination of the rich soil of the French Riviera and the aquatic breath of the Mediterranean to become ‘rose de Mai’.

The eponymous perfume is built around the most refined extract one can obtain: absolute. It is available on a very limited scale from the rose plantations in the region.

Rose de Mai is a beautiful rose perfume, voluminous and richly nuanced but also it’s a story the perfumer wanted to tell with the physical aroma.

"A rose is a rose is a rose..." this famous saying written by Gertrude Stein, one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century. This phrase simply states that among all flowers the rose is truly unique and today we have more than 50 varieties. Roses can be light, sublime, fresh, seductive, soft and also erotic when blended with patchouli and musk. I answered this delicate flower’s provocative calling with soft and voluptuous notes, and among all I have chosen the May Rose as it is the most cultivated flower in Grasse. For me Rose de Mai smells the brightest and most cheerful. “

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

This is a rose for unhurried conversation in daylight: bright and open at first impression, with a softer, more voluptuous character at close range. Its generous floral presence suits a welcoming mood, where the scent feels like part of the wearer rather than a formal announcement.

How to wear

Spring and mild early-summer weather are natural settings for its bright rose character. Start with one or two sprays on the neck or forearms, allowing the floral nuances and musk to unfold on warm skin. In hotter weather or close indoor settings, apply lightly to keep the rose from filling the space.

Who it’s for

For those who want rose to remain unmistakably at the centre of a perfume, but appreciate nuance beyond a simple floral impression. It suits a taste for luminous florals, soft musk and generous petal-like textures rather than dark, heavily spiced or sugary interpretations.

The nose

Jean-Claude Ellena is renowned for compositions that achieve expressive depth through restraint, transparency and carefully chosen materials. His work includes Terre d’Hermès and Un Jardin sur le Nil, fragrances that reflect his ability to suggest a landscape without reproducing every detail. For Rose de Mai, he brings that sensitivity to the centifolia rose of his native Grasse, emphasizing its brightness within a soft, voluptuous composition.

Collaborators

Gian Luca Perris conceived the Grasse collection and established its focus on regional ingredients and perfume-making traditions. He invited Jean-Claude Ellena to interpret those themes, supplying the principal ingredient direction while giving the perfumer creative freedom.

Perris Monte Carlo’s story

Perris Monte Carlo places craftsmanship and raw materials at the centre of its idea of luxury. The house combines an interest in traditional extraction and perfume-making knowledge with technological innovation, favouring compositions that reveal the character of their ingredients. Rose de Mai expresses this approach through its focus on Grasse rose absolute.

Rose de Mai’s concept

Created for Les Parfums de Grasse alongside Jasmin de Pays, Rose de Mai celebrates the region’s floral heritage through Ellena’s memories of harvesting flowers with his grandmother. Its central subject is the centifolia rose, which he chose for its luminous, cheerful character, translating a familiar flower into a generous yet softly nuanced perfume.

Extra info

The name refers to the May-harvested centifolia rose associated with Grasse. Despite its rose-led identity, the official composition also includes immortelle and rose geranium, with musk forming the base.
