For those who love the scent of tobacco: barely sweet, fairly earthy, squarely herbaceous. This is treasure found at the bottom of the sea, a wooden chest filled with tobacco leaves in all their fermented, honeyed beauty. A patina of salt, the result of time and tide, infuses the experience.
All about this fragrance
Vibe check
A late afternoon spent sorting old books at a wooden desk suits its unhurried, tactile character. Herbaceous tobacco and salt suggest something weathered rather than polished, while smoky resins lend gravity to the space immediately around the wearer.
How to wear
Cool to mild weather is a natural starting point for its resinous woods and earthy tobacco. Begin with one or two sprays on skin, leaving room for the juniper and saline facets alongside the darker materials. Apply lightly in warm rooms, where the honeyed tobacco and resins may feel fuller.
Who it’s for
For tobacco lovers who prefer fermented leaf, earth and herbs to sugary pipe-tobacco accords. Its salty, smoky woods and resinous depth will also appeal to those drawn to savory fragrances, leather-like textures and unconventional marine themes.

The nose
Euan McCall is the perfumer behind Sunken Tobacco. The Scottish perfumer and co-founder of Jorum Studio is known for textural compositions that explore botanical materials, unexpected contrasts and unconventional beauty. Here, his approach gives the familiar warmth of tobacco a salt-weathered, herbaceous setting rather than a straightforwardly sweet treatment.
Collaborators
Leo Crabtree, BeauFort’s founder and creative director, shaped the concept through his visit to Stockholm’s Vasa Museum. He supplied the idea of tobacco transformed by prolonged submersion, giving Euan McCall the imaginative brief of fermented leaves recovered from a wooden chest beneath the sea.
Beaufort’s story
BeauFort London builds powerful, narrative-led fragrances around smoke, maritime experience and the elements. Its independent spirit favours unusual materials and challenging contrasts over broad appeal. The Force Majeure collection turns that sensibility toward tides, geology and forces beyond human control.
Sunken Tobacco’s concept
After several years of tobacco experiments, Crabtree found the decisive inspiration in the atmosphere of Stockholm’s Vasa Museum. He imagined seawater shaping tobacco as a cask shapes whisky: preserving it while making it darker and richer. Sunken Tobacco interprets that imagined transformation, rather than using tobacco or perfume actually aged underwater.
Extra info
Sunken Tobacco completes BeauFort’s Force Majeure chapter. Its unusual composition includes cherry mead, blackcurrant absolute and damson alongside tobacco absolute, seaweed and ambergris, extending the central contrast between fermented sweetness and marine character.
