Perfumer: Luca Maffei

Vanhera: a dark Vanilla, an unexpected fragrance that recalls intriguing and unclear sensations. A journey around one of the most iconic perfumery’s notes. A Vanilla perfume, not the usual Vanilla fragrance where just sweet notes are emphasized. A battle, a conflict among ingredients.

In Vanhera, a Madagascar Vanilla absolute tries to find a place in a universe of ingredients that want to suppress it. Vanhera is surrounded, almost besieged, by spicy notes of pepper, cardamom, cinnamon; it is embraced by warm notes of sandalwood and cashmeran and it is stained by karmawood, timbersilk and ambery notes. Nevertheless, the Vanilla absolute arises and makes its presence felt, conquering heart and soul of whoever smells it.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

An evening conversation that stretches beyond the last cup of coffee: Vanhera's vanilla brings warmth to close company, while pepper and dry woods keep the sweetness from feeling cosy or sugary. Its register is intimate but edged, more deliberate than comforting.

How to wear

Cool autumn and winter weather suits the warm vanilla, sandalwood and amber profile. Start with one or two sprays on the torso or neck, allowing the spicy opening to settle before adding more. In warmer conditions, use a lighter application to keep the sweetness and woody amber from dominating.

Who it’s for

For vanilla lovers who want spice, dry woods and darker texture rather than a pastry-like gourmand. It also suits those drawn to amber fragrances who appreciate sweetness held in tension by pepper, cinnamon and sandalwood.

Release year

2017

The nose

Luca Maffei is an Italian perfumer whose work spans independent artistic perfumery and established fragrance houses. His compositions often balance luminous detail with richly textured woods, spices and amber. For Laboratorio Olfattivo, his creations include MyLO and Nun; Vanhera takes a darker direction, exploring the leathery, slightly animalic facets of Madagascar vanilla absolute rather than its familiar confectionery sweetness.

Collaborators

Roberto Drago developed the creative brief for Vanhera, asking Luca Maffei for a composition markedly different from his earlier floral work for the house. Their creative direction placed the darker character of vanilla at the center, resisting a predominantly dessert-like interpretation.

Laboratorio Olfattivo’s story

Laboratorio Olfattivo treats perfume as a laboratory for stories, memories and sensory experimentation. Founded by Daniela Caon and Roberto Drago, the Italian house gives collaborating perfumers creative freedom, favoring distinctive ideas over formulas shaped solely by market demand.

Vanhera’s concept

Vanhera began as an exploration of vanilla's less familiar side: dark, slightly leathery and animalic. Luca Maffei paired Madagascar vanilla absolute with Sichuan pepper and powerful amber materials to emphasize sensuality over confectionery sweetness. The house expresses this contrast through an imagined struggle in which vanilla is surrounded by spices and woods but ultimately makes itself felt.

Extra info

Vanhera was introduced in the Laboratorio in Nero collection, now labeled Classic Collection Nera. Its published notes include the woody materials Karmawood and Timbersilk alongside Madagascar vanilla absolute. The fragrance also has matching body-lotion and shower-gel versions.
