This edit is an excellent foray into the fantastic world of figs in fragrance. Ultimately, notes related to fig are not made with essences derived from the actual plant but are recreations (or fantasies!) made with certain chemical compounds. These compounds are part of the plant metabolism but are synthesised for perfumers’ needs. The key, and fairly old, material used is called Stemone® (a handy industry name for 5-Methyl-3-heptanone oxime) and there is also a certain type of lactone. The former is greener whilst the latter smells fruitier. Both compounds are quite sturdy and can survive in relatively harsh environments, such as burning candles and shower gels.
Perfumers are always trying to style the fig note chemicals in a more sophisticated manner (in comparison to room ambiance or bath products) by adding various natural extracts and other fancy synthetics.
This selection features perfumes, in which the fig note travels from the orchard to the jam jar. There are green and airy options as well as delicious patisserie and fig tart inspired blends.
A fig orchard interpretation. Kérylos is a villa built in the aesthetics of Ancient Greece on a cliff not far from Cannes. To add to the ambiance, the original Greek owner planted an orchard filled with fig and peach trees. The perfume captures the atmosphere of the breezes from Mediterranean sea mixing with blooming fruit trees.
A steady bestseller in the neroli category, Pure Azure conjures up a sunny orchard where the aromas of green leaves, blooming orange trees, ripening figs and hot soil mix with the salty breeze of the Mediterranean.
It might be a bit of an olfactive quest to detect the fig note in this perfume since it features so many green nuances. The fig leaves accord is interlinked with aromas of bamboo shoots, fir needles and wasabi.
A beautifully composed, delicious and sophisticated perfume which highlights different modes of fig at every layer - from the fragrant bitter green of the leaves to the candied fig in the base.
The sweet, jammy fig interpretation. In PG14, the overripe fig note is floating in honey, rich Mexican vanilla and amber.
